Woolcock Institute of Medical Research

The Institute was established in 1981 by the late Professor Ann Woolcock (1937 – 2001) to provide a centre of excellence for respiratory research in Australia. It was originally named the Institute of Respiratory Medicine and this was changed in 2002 in honour of its founder.

The Institute outgrew its original location at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the current purpose-built laboratory and clinical complex was established in the nearby suburb of Glebe in 2008 with the generous support of the State and Federal Governments.

Today, the Woolcock is structured as a not-for-profit company. We have Memoranda of Understanding and Departmental status with both The University of Sydney and Sydney South West Area Health Service. We have collaborative agreements with the Hunter Area Health Service, the University of Newcastle, and Liverpool, Concord and Royal North Shore Hospitals and branch offices in China and Vietnam as part of programs to deliver improvements in the management of asthma, COPD and tuberculosis.
