University of Illinois at Urbana,Champaign

Chartered as the Illinois Industrial University, the University opened for business in 1868. Renamed the University of Illinois in 1885, it is one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions created after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act in 1862. Since its founding, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has been committed to excellence in research, teaching, and public engagement.

The University is in the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana (total population 180,000) in east-central Illinois. Situated about 140 miles south of Chicago, 125 miles west of Indianapolis, and 180 miles northeast of St. Louis.

The university comprises 17 colleges that offer more than 150 programs of study. Additionally, the university operates an extension that serves 2.7 million registrants per year around the state of Illinois and beyond. The campus holds 647 buildings on 4,552 acres (1,842 ha) in the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana (together known as Champaign-Urbana); its annual operating budget in 2011 was over $1.7 billion.

The University Library is one of the largest public university libraries in the nation, with more than 24 million items in the main library and over 35 departmental libraries and divisions. More than one million patrons from around the world access the online catalog each week. In its 2014 rankings, U.S.News & World Report's America's Best Colleges rated Illinois as the number 11 public university and the number 41 national university.

At Illinois, research shapes the campus identity, stimulates classroom instruction and serves as a springboard for public engagement activities throughout the world.
