The University of Rennes 1 is rooted in a prestigious history of more than five centuries: it is the direct heir of the very first university in the region, founded at Nantes in 1461 by Francis II, Duke of Brittany. Officially dissolved in 1793, the ducal university gave way in 1808 to a secular imperial imperial university established in Rennes and radiating over the great west.
