Use of fuzopuncture in the treatment of knee oseoarthritis

Objective: To attain a better therapeutic effect, drug injection to acupuncture points is widely used in Korea. Fuzopuncture is a prominent acupuncture point injection technique which utilizes specific acupuncture points localized on the joints, muscles acting in concert with the joints, and spinal regions innervating the joints. Evaluation of Fuzopuncture with placental extract on pain reduction and joint function was performed in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: Fifty two patients with knee OA at average age of 65 having symptom duration of more than 3 months were studied in this report. Placental extract was weekly injected into acupuncture point ST35, LR8, KI10, SP10, ST34, GB31, and BL25 for five weeks; eight milliliters of placental extract into ST35 on the affected side and each a milliliter of placental extract to LR8, KI10, SP10, ST34, GB31, and BL25 on both sides. Results: After Fuzopuncture with placental extract for five weeks, pain was substantially decreased in patients of all Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grades. Improvement of knee joint swelling was also apparent. Decrease of pain and joint swelling enabled the patients of all KL grades to make daily working life better to result in increase of productive time. Conclusions: Study results imply that Fuzopuncture with placental extract is a potentially useful therapy to control pain and maintain joint functions in knee OA patients.

Kyeongmee Park has completed her PhD from Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology and Medical Doctor from Daejon University School of Oriental Medicine. She has investigated and reported effect of a new acupuncture point injection technique, Fuzopuncture in various musculoskeletal diseases. She recently published 5 books and 6 papers. She is the director of Inno Oriental Clinic as well as Fuzopuncture Institute.
