The relationship between cultural, economic and social factors with mobile phone addiction and the motivation of academic achievement among secondary school students

Abstract


This is a fact that many factors have effect on the motivation of academic achievement. In this research the purpose was investigating the relationship between cultural, economic and social factors with mobile phone addiction and the motivation of academic achievement among secondary school students in Zahedan. The research method was descriptive - correlational. The statistical population of this study was all students of secondary schools with total population of 4500 students who according to the (Krejcie & Morgan, 1970) table, 350 students were chosen by multi stage cluster sampling method. A three-section questionnaire was used to collect data. The first section consisted of demographic data (Sex, Age, Course, Filed). The Second section was an 18-item questionnaire about cultural, economic and social factors. The third section was a 43-item questionnaire about motivation of academic achievement. The fourth section was a 13-item questionnaire about mobile phone addiction. Content and face validity of questionnaire confirmed by faculty members with educational administration and psychology specialties. Reliability of questionnaire was calculated through Cronbach's alpha (0.79, 0.81 and 0.86 respectively). The collected date entered SPSS version 22.0 and analyzed by statistician. The results of correlation test showed that there was a significant relationship between cultural, social and economic socioeconomic status with mobile phone addiction and Motivation of academic achievement. Also, the results of the stepwise regression test showed that 59% of the changes in mobile phone addiction were attributed to the cultural factors and 63% of the changes in mobile phone addiction by two dimensions of cultural and social factors. Also 35% of the changes in motivation of academic achievement by the dimension of cultural factors and 37% of the changes in motivation of academic achievement were predictable by two dimensions of cultural and social factors. It was recommended that school psychologists, teachers, school administrators, parents and students should be sensitized on the influence of mobile phone usage on motivation of academic achievement among secondary school students. However, necessary trainings and education on how mobile phone appropriately a serious task in today’s world that needs enough consideration and attention since it can decrease some of its complications such as academic achievement.
