Abstract

Michigan State University has been operating an industrial scale anaerobic digester facility for more than 5 years. Annually this facility processes more than 20,000 metric tons of organic waste, extracts the biogas produced in the anaerobic digestion process and produces more than 3,000 MWh of electricity from it. The leftover digestate is a high-quality organic fertilizer, which can be used to grow crops. Of particular interest is the project to collect food waste in the university cafeteria system and utilize it as feedstock for the digester.
