Abstract
Purpose: The cause of diabetes consists of various co-factors. One of the most common factors is diet. Research has shown a connection between high fat diets interfering with the genetic mechanism of insulin production leading to the classic signs of diabetes. The purpose of this research is to examine the GnT- 4a enzyme and understand the relation between the enzyme and diabetes.
Methods: This research was established by conducting PubMed and Ovid literature searches. I examined both primary and tertiary literature for this project.
Conclusions: Through countless studies, there is a direct correlation to the GnT-4a enzyme and the production of insulin. Due to a person’s diet, that can impact the production of enzyme which will ultimately influence insulin production. The key role of the GnT-4a enzyme is to maintain glucose transporters in place on the surface of the beta cell. After conducting research, it has been shown that a high fat diet will decrease the production of the enzyme which leads to pancreatic beta cell failure which leads to type 2 diabetes.
