The impact of iron deficiency during gestation on fetus birth weight

Abstract


Iron deficiency during gestation will have several perinatal morbidities including chorioamniotitis, preterm delivery, low birth weight, perinatal morbidities as well as cardiovascular disease in maternal later life. We retrospectively study mothers who were having antenatal examination and have their first blood drawn in the first trimester following until their labor time who have their blood drawn in the delivery ward for comparison of the changes of hemoglobin to see the impact of anemia on fetus birth weight. From January 1 to December 31, 2016 there were a total of 4,696 mothers who gave birth at our hospital with group 1 (4,290) with normal hemoglobin level during their whole gestation and group 2 comprising those who were anemic during the first trimester and was corrected to normal level at their third trimester and group 3 with those who were anemic during their whole gestation. There was a significant difference between those who were anemic during their whole gestation with the adjusted odd ratio of 3.273 giving birth to a lower birth weight baby (less than 2500 gm) compare to those who were not anemic or those who were first anemic and corrected at their third trimester. It was important to closely monitor the hemoglobin level during the whole gestation and corrected accordingly to prevent the occurrence of lower birth weight baby in those implicated mothers.
