The economic activity results of small cattle breeding farms; case of Konya province

Abstract


In this study, the economic activity results of the enterprises were member of Sheep and Goat Breeder’s Association in Konya province, benefited from the support within the scope of the Sheep & Goat Farming Project in the Public Hand, were evaluated. The data used in the study were obtained from 74 enterprises engaging in sheep and goat farming in accordance with the principle of volunteerism. While 40 of those enterprises were growing sheep, 34 of them were growing goat. The data belongs to 2016. The number of sheep and goats (small animal) constitutes 74.4% of the total animal population of Turkey. While the number of sheep constitutes 74.96 % of the total small animal assets, the number of goats constitutes 25.03% of it. The total meat of Turkey derived from small animal, forms the 12.47 % of the total meat production, 9.82 % thereof is provided from sheep. At the same time, 8 % of Turkey’s milk production is derived from sheep and goats. With a total of 2,088,454 head small cattle assets, Konya province ranks second in the country. While 90.5% of the small animal assets is sheep, the remaining 9.5% is goat. 87,927 ton milk was obtained from small cattle in Konya in 2016. Whereas 87.41% of this milk was obtained from sheep, 12.59% of it was obtained from goats. The amount of milk obtained from small cattle in Konya constitutes 5.36% of total small cattle milk production in Turkey. The average total gross profit for per enterprise was 177,238.78 $. As a results of the study, 139,668.92$ (78.80%) of the total gross profit belongs to the sheep farming enterprises, while 37,569.86$ (21.19%) of it belongs to goat farming enterprises. In the study, unit cost of one-kilogram milk was calculated as 0.42$ in the sheep enterprise and 0.87$ in the goat farming enterprise.
