Abstract

The medical institutions had paid attention to the medication error via the Medication Administration Information System to improve the accuracy and the working time of the medication process. It was under investigated about the philosophical framework of the scientific knowledge generation through interacting with the users. The purpose of this study within the concept of co-construction, exploring the interactive relationship between the users and relevant the scientific knowledge and found out how the values and beliefs were co-constructed in the implementation process in Taiwan. The field observation, in-depth interview, and document analysis were adopted. The interview with ten users (three head nurses, three clinical nurses, one informatics nursing specialist and three patients), who experienced the traditional medication administration system and the Medication Administration Information System. The findings showed that the Medication Administration Information System was developed in the progressive impression of technology more than the analysis of nursing behaviours at the medication error. Whether the system was useful for users or not, the nurses were educated most. When the nurses did not agree to the usefulness, they had been criticized as not know about the professional function of the system for the nursing care as well. Therefore, the nurses depend on the professional technology instead of professional judgment to perform/prove the professional medication administration and appear the only responsibility and role of nursing in the medication administration process of Taiwan. Some suggestions are proposed to the nursing practice, education and policy as well.
