Abstract
Background: With average of 2198 rabies deaths from 1960-2014, rabies is a major public health problem in China. After possible rabies exposure, victim should receive Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) including wound treatment, rabies vaccination and rabies immunoglobulin if indicated. Therefore, describing the rabies PEP clinics distribution could help identify the resident’s accessibility of medical resource related to rabies.
Method: We collected the information rabies PEP clinic of 28 provinces (except Taiwan, Tibet, Ningxia and Chongqing) in China published by China CDC in 2018. The number and density of rabies PEP clinics by different provinces were caculated and ranked.
Result: There was 3,0241 rabies PEP clincs in total. Sichuan (3754 clinics), Hunan (2334 clinics), Henan (2103 clinics) and Shandong (2073 clinics) ranked the top 4 and accounted for 33.94% clinics in China. The average number of PEP clinics was 2.24 clinics per 100,000 persons. Guizhou (4.56 clinics per 100,000 persons), Hainan (4.54 clinics per 100,000 persons), Sichuan (4.52 clinics per 100,000 persons) and Yuanan (4.05 clinics per 100,000 persons) ranked the top 4. The average density was 36.73 clinics per 10,000 km2. Jiangsu (151.75 clinics per 10,000 km2), Shandong (134.76 clinics per 10,000 km2), Henan (125.93 clinics per 10,000 km2) and Hainan (123.93 clinics per 10,000 km2) ranked the top 4.
Conlusion: In China, provinces in southern and center region had more medical resource related to rabies and resident in these regions can access PEP more easily.
