Statement of the Problem: Orthodontic treatment needs increase along with availability of health care and public demands. Orthodontics treatment needs can be measured by using an index based on esthetic levels, oral health and deviation of normal occlusion. Index of orthodontic treatment needs comprises of two components, i.e. Aesthetic Component (AC) and Dental Health Component (DHC). Dental Health Component (DHC) index measures orthodontic treatment needs based on several malocclusion such as, overjet, overbite, open bite, cross-bite, shifting contact and anomalies of palate and lips as well as hypodonsia. The purpose of this study to determine orthodontic treatment needs of high school adolescents based on Dental Health Component (DHC) in Medan. Methodology & Theoretical Orientation: This is a descriptive study with cross sectional approach and simple random sampling method. The subjects of the study are 300 high school students in Medan. Findings: The study shows 71.7% subjects with no or mild treatment needs 14.0% subjects with moderate treatment needs and 14.3% subjects with complex treatment needs. Conclusion & Significance: The largest distribution of orthodontic treatment needs of high school adolescents based on DHC in Medan is no or mild treatment needs. hildadrgusu@gmail.com
