Abstract

Orofacial Doppler Ultrasonography (ODUS) is currently an indispensable complementary diagnostic method in clinical dental practice. It has once again been studied in dentistry in the role of the dental surgeon in Orofacial Harmonisation since it became a speciality of dentistry in Brazil. The most frequent requests for ODUS have been for diagnosis and initial assessment of patients who are going to undergo Orofacial Harmonisation, i.e., initial orofacial mapping. However, there are other indications for requesting the exam: as a complementary diagnostic method in soft tissue pathologies, in some cases avoiding biopsy of the lesion in surgical planning; in ultrasound-guided procedures and in the reversal of aesthetic complications, guided by ultrasound, ensuring greater assertiveness. The clinical case in this publication presents a sublingual soft tissue lesion. It is a pseudo-cyst, on the right side, probably caused by trauma or obstruction of the salivary duct. This lesion was clinically assessed in the Oral Pathology department and followed up at all stages by radiology through ODUS. The clinical history, photographic images of the lesion and ultrasound follow-up of this clinical case will be presented. The lesion progressed to a stage of swallowing and phonation difficulties and all the clinical phases, up to the present time, were recorded on ODUS images. Linear probe images in longitudinal and transverse positions were taken on a LOGIC E - GE HEALTHCARE - high frequency device. Images generated in MODE B, 22 MHz frequency linear probe. The ODUS was essential for defining the treatment of the lesion. Orofacial Doppler Ultrasound is the complementary diagnostic method studied in my master’s research in Radiology and Dental Imaging. It’s a low-cost, accessible exam that doesn’t emit ionising radiation and is widely indicated in dentistry, bringing safety and assertiveness to dental procedures. ODUS is currently the gold standard complementary test in dentistry. And its use still has much to be studied and developed in dentistry. Keywords: Orofacial Doppler Ultrasonography (ODUS), Stomatology, Orofacial mapping, Pseudocyst, Ranula.
