Abstract

Introduction: Noise pollution is a significant occupational hazard, recognized by national safety organizations. Dental professionals are consistently exposed to various levels of noise from instruments, posing a serious risk to their hearing health. This can lead to irreversible hearing loss. Importance in Dental Clinics: Global research confirms the link between dental instrument noise and hearing loss. This has far-reaching effects on social, psychological, and economic aspects of professionals’ lives, affecting productivity and incurring expenses. Regulations in some countries, like the US, mandate protective measures. Significance in Saudi Arabia: Limited studies in Saudi Arabia indicate a lack of awareness among dental professionals about this occupational hazard, hindering effective prevention. Aim: This paper addresses the absence of safety measures in Saudi Arabia to prevent Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) due to dental instrument noise. Method: Critical review of relevant literature, combined with computerized searches on Google Scholar, PubMed, and university libraries. Results: Studies consistently link dental instrument noise to hearing loss. Recommendations include regular audiometric testing and protective gear. Discussion: NIHL is a global occupational hazard among dental professionals, with studies since 1959 establishing the association between dental instruments and hearing loss. Saudi Arabia’s limited research reflects a lack of awareness among professionals. Conclusion: NIHL is a critical occupational risk in dentistry. Global studies emphasize prevention through regular testing and protective measures. The limited research in Saudi Arabia highlights the need for increased awareness and prevention measures.
