Herbal heritage among tribes of Madhya Pradesh, India used in the treatment of viral hepatitis

Abstract
Madhya Pradesh, a central provenience of India is a repository of herbal medicines, and has a large number of tribes viz., goand, baiga, bhils, koals etc. Viral hepatitis an inflammation of liver caused by virus and the severity will results in permanent damage of liver. Herbs traditionally served as man’s most important weapon against pathogens. Herbal medicines are widely used by all sections of the community, either as folk remedies or as medicaments in the indigenous as well as modern system of medicine. The tribes of Madhya Pradesh use the herbs around them to cure the disease from the root. The present work was conducted to record the herbal heritage among tribes of Madhya Pradesh, India used for the treatment of viral hepatitis. Data were collected by interviewing tribes of the region. A total of 21 herbs were obtained along with 7 distinct formulation adopted by the tribes. Information on local names, plant parts, chemical constituents and dosage used were also recorded and reported in the present paper. Attempt was also made to correlate the MOA of herbs used.
