Abstract


Learning and understanding the oral health issues of those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementias – especially for those who can no longer communicate with their families and/or caregivers will be discussed. Signs and symptoms of oral problems, including dry mouth (with the possibility of swallowing difficulties), abscesses, loss of weight, ill-fitting dentures, and malodor will be described, along with solutions to address these common problems.

Biography


Dr. Joy Poskozim has been providing dental care to those who cannot come to a traditional dental office for over fifteen years throughout Chicagoland. Dr. Poskozim earned her Fellowship with the Special Care Dentistry Association, Geriatric Council in 2020, and has recently earned her CDP (Certified Dementia Practitioner). "Dr. Joy" has been a guest speaker advocating for oral care for seniors nationwide, having appeared on several radio shows and podcasts, including the American Dental Association's podcast, "Beyond the Mouth", as well as having presented for the National Academy of Home Care Medicine National conference in 2020. An avid blogger, she has written for Innovation Women, changingaging.org, and several other senior care agencies.
