Epipsammic diatoms of Tohma Water in Malatya, Turkey

Abstract
This is the first algological study carried out in Tohma Water, Malatya-Turkey and it aims at detecting the epipsammic diatoms of the water and thus contributing to the identification of the algal flora of our inland waters. Diatoms are regarded as important components of benthic algae both in salt water and fresh water, and they are widely used as biomonitors. Tohma Water is the second biggest stream of Malatya City of Turkey after Euphrates, which marks the eastern border of Malatya. The epipsammic diatoms of Tohma Water were analyzed by taking samples from two different stations in the period of March- December 2015. A total of 19 taxa belonging to station I and a total of 26 taxa belonging to station II were identified in Tohma Water. Cymbella spp., Gomphonema spp. and Navicula spp. were found to be the most significant species with respect to their frequency of occurrence and high population numbers in the epipsammic diatom community. The possibility factors for causing the differences between stations were discussed. The results were also discussed with the findings of other similar studies.

Zeliha Selamoglu is a Professor in Medical Biology department of Nigde omer Halisdemir University, Turkey. She earned her PhD in Biology from Inonu University, She has published over 90 peerreviewed journal articles with over 835 citations and many technical reports. She is a member of Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine: Associate Membership and European association for cancer research. She has served as Editorial Board member for many Journals. Her research Interest: Medical Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Oxidative stress, Antioxidants, Cancer.
