Abstract

Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue present with a wide array of lesions ranging from nonspecific dermatoses to papulonodular lesions to frank neoplasms. Though cytopathology is widely used for the diagnosis of papulonodular lesions, studies documenting its efficacy and histopathological and cytological correlation are sparse. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and diagnostic accuracy of various cytological techniques in papulonodular lesions of skin, to correlate the cytological, histopathological and clinical findings of the Papulonodular lesions of skin and to find out the sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of cytological methods in cutaneous papulonodular lesions. Materials and Methods: Cytological and histopathological examination of 126 cases of cutaneous papulonodular lesions was conducted at the level of tertiary care hospital. The findings of both the diagnostic modalities were correlated with each other. Results: Of the 126 patients with papulonodular skin lesions evaluated by cytology, majority of the lesions were neoplastic followed by non – neoplastic (infectious and non-infectious) papulonodular lesions. Neoplastic lesions comprise majority of benign tumors followed by primary malignant and cutaneous metastatic tumors. The non-infectious lesions were most commonly encountered non-neoplastic followed by infectious lesions. Conclusion: Fine needle aspiration cytology along with slit skin smears/scrape smears are rapid, reliable and fairly accurate tools for initial triage and treatment of skin and superficial soft tissue lesions.
