Abstract

Statement of the Problem: Deprescribing is a novel tool that would be helpful in decreasing polypharmacy, eluding inappropriate medication use, and monitoring the occurrence of adverse drug events. Geriatric people are often given a large number of medicines that are inappropriate and may have multiple comorbidities. Hence it is important to assess the possibility of deprescribing in them. The aim of this study was to assess the attitude of geriatric patients towards deprescribing in a tertiary care hospital. Methodology: A prospective observational study was conducted for six months at KLEs Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and MRC, Belagavi, India. The rPATD questionnaire was used for assessing the patient attitude, and the data collected were analyzed using SPSS (IBM) version 22.0. Findings: Out of 211 participants enrolled in the study, 95.7% were willing to discontinue their medicines with their doctor’s approval. 61.1% belonged to the lower class, and 34.6% were illiterate. 46.4% were hesitant to discontinue medications they had been using for a long time, while 87.2% were satisfied with their medicines. Conclusion & Significance: The majority of patients are willing to deprescribe their medicines if their treating doctor says it is possible. Future studies should be directed at deprescribing in the geriatric population, which would help to simplify the medication regimen for them.
