Abstract
Diabetes is a major chronic health problem in Saudi Arabia and worldwide. The literature shows that diabetes is a prevalent disease in the kingdom. Studies also have shown that Saudi Arabia ranks the seventh top country in the prevalence of diabetes globally. Diabetes results in micro vascular as well as macro-vascular complications on a long term. Peripheral neuropathy PN is one of the common chronic complications of diabetes. Peripheral neuropathy is characterized by damage of peripheral nerves that leads to loss of their functions. Evidence shows that age, duration of diabetes, and A1c level were risk factors for developing PN in diabetes. Aim: This poster was designed to review literature for the current practice of managing PN in adults with diabetes in Saudi Arabia, and to identify missing treatment options .Methodology: We conducted a search to review published papers during the last five years using PubMed and Google scholar platforms. We focused on the treatment options selected for adults with diabetes diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy PN.Results: Out of 8 studies, Algeffari MA study showed that 35% of pt with type2 diabetes have painful DPN. Interestingly, none of them was given treatment. In Ashraf A, et al., 45.1%(n=2) received treatment for DPN. Rest of studies did not specify any treatment option. Conclusion: It is clear from this review that there is an extreme limitation of treatment offered to diabetic with DPN. More studies needed to know exactly what the barriers¿ are and what is missing in the healthcare system as a whole.
