Abstract

Prevalence of Sports Injuries in Adolescent Athletes

Adolescence is the common age for sport involvement and theses athletes are more vulnerable to injury compared to adults. Due to the various factors there is a need to know the prevalence, nature of injuries and the various factors contributing to them in sports like football, hockey, cricket, athletics and basketball are the most common played here. Athletes in age group of 11-19 years who play competitive sports were recruited from the stadium and athletic training centers over a period of one year. They were observed prospectively to detect the occurrence of injuries, injury rate both previous and new. A structured questionnaire was developed and given to the athletes to note injuries and causes for it. Prevalence of sports injuries was 65% in this study. Injury risk factors found in this study were male gender, age, psychological and stress related issues, previous injuries.
