Genetic engineering in agriculture enables scientists to introduce desirable traits into crops quickly and precisely. One key application is the incorporation of pest resistance genes. By integrating genes from naturally resistant organisms into crop plants, such as Bacillus Thuringiensis (Bt) toxin genes in cotton or corn, crops can defend themselves against pests without relying on chemical pesticides. The technology raises questions regarding the safety of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) for human consumption and the potential for gene flow to wild relatives or non-target organisms.

To address these concerns, stringent regulatory frameworks are in place in many countries to ensure the safety and proper assessment of genetically engineered crops before their release into the environment and the food market. Robust risk assessment procedures, including long-term health and environmental monitoring, help mitigate potential risks associated with genetically engineered crops.
