Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a surgical procedure that has been used to treat various neurological disorders, including Parkinson's Disease (PD). PD is a chronic and progressive neurological disorder that affects the brain's ability to control movement. It is caused by the degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. DBS is a relatively new and highly effective treatment option for patients with advanced PD who no longer respond to medication or have severe side effects.
The procedure involves implanting small electrodes in specific areas of the brain that control movement. The DBS procedure is reversible and can be adjusted to meet the patient's changing needs. The neurostimulator can be programmed to deliver different levels of electrical stimulation to the brain, depending on the patient's symptoms and response to treatment. The patient is given a handheld device that allows them to adjust the level of stimulation as needed. The patient is also closely monitored by their healthcare team to ensure that the DBS is providing the maximum benefit with minimal side effects.
