Abstract
This study describes the characteristics and role of a walking tourism project, footpath tourism, in Japan. The role of this kind of project in revitalizing the local community is highlighted. Local residents involved in the active management of walking tourism may rediscover local attractions in the process. The author conducted simulations using a system dynamics model to visualize the project’s characteristics and its effects on the local area. The results of the analysis indicate that local community participation in such projects and local environmental conservation are indispensable for sustainable management.
