Tinnitus
Generally, tinnitus can be categorized as pulsatile or nonpulsatile. Pulsatile tinnitus is heard synchronously with each heartbeat. This form of tinnitus heightens a suspicion of a vascular etiology, meaning that the blood vessels around the inner ear may be causing the problem. Nonpulsatile tinnitus can occur for other reasons. The diagnosis of tinnitus is made based on subjective complaints of the patient. As yet, there is no medical way to test for the existence of tinnitus. However, an audiologist can perform a tinnitus evaluation to determine the frequency level of the tinnitus as well as the masking potential. Tinnitus is a very difficult condition to treat since the origins of it have yet to be completely understood or explained. However, there are treatments that will help manage the symptoms.
