Stapedectomy
Stapedectomy is a surgical procedure of the middle ear performed to improve hearing. A stapedectomy is ear surgery that can be done to treat hearing loss caused by a problem called otosclerosis. The surgery is done to replace the stapes with an artificial part. Stapedectomy is performed though the ear canal under local or general anesthesia. The laser is routinely used to vaporize parts of the stapes and the remainder of the stapes is removed. Improvement in hearing may be apparent but maximum hearing, however, is obtained in approximately six months.
