Biography
Professor Vincenzo Petruzzelli was born on 1955 in Bari (Italy) and in 1986 he graduated in Electrical Engineering from the University of Bari. In 1992 he received the Ph. D. in Electronic Engineering (Electromagnetism) at the Dipartimento of Elettrotecnica ed Elettronica of Politecnico di Bari. Since November 1994 he is engaged as Assistant Professor at the Engineer Faculty of the Politecnico di Bari. Since 1999 he is a Member of Electronic Engineer doctorate Courses. Since March 2001 he is engaged as Associate Professor in Electromagnetic Fields at the Dipartimento of Elettrotecnica ed Elettronica of Politecnico di Bari.
Dr. Petruzzelli was appointed as Delegate of the Rector for the electronic scientific Library in may 2004 and been Coordinator for the Politecnico di Bari for the CIVR (Comitato Italiano per la Valutazione della Ricerca, Italian Commission of the research evaluation) procedures from May 2004 to November 2005. From 2009 to 2013 Prof. Petruzzelli was member of the Management Committee appointed by the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific Research in the activities of the MP0805 COST action ”Novel Gain Materials and Devices Based on III-V-N Compounds”. Since December 2009 he is Delegate of the Rector for the Library System of the Politecnico di Bari.
The scientific activity of Prof. Vincenzo Petruzzelli, since 1986, has dealt with different research topics. In particular, he has been engaged in theoretical and technological research on optic devices and circuits by modelling waveguiding passive and active structures. More recently, he is engaged in the design of: (a) photonic bandgap passive and active devices; (b) microwave systems devoted to the treatment of works of art and the disinfestation of the wheat from biological parasites; (c) photonic crystal active devices based on GaInNAs semiconductors (the so-called dilute nitrides) for the realization of switches and active filters; (d) periodic structures for the realization of laser based on the optical self-collimation property of mesoscopic structures; (e) innovative optical devices for the Optical Interconnects on chip; (f) plasmonic periodic nanostructures supporting Polaritons of surface plasmons (SPP) and Localized Surface plasmons (LSP) for the realization of sensors plasmonic in the linear regime, with elevate sensitivity and figure of merit, while in the nonlinear regime, substrates for Raman spectroscopy for which the Raman amplification is due to the excitation of the plasmon resonance of the metallic nanostructures.
Prof. Petruzzelli has co-authored over 310 publications, 110 of which published on international journals and 150 international conferences. He acts as Referee of international journals IEEE (Journal of Lightwave Technology, Photonics Technology Letters, Transactions on Nanotechnology, Journal of Quantum Electronics), OSA (Optics Express, J. of Optical Society of America, Applied Optics, Optics Letters), Journal of Electromagnetic Waves and Applications, Progress in Electromagnetics Research, IEE Electronics Letters, IEE Proc. Microwaves, Antennas & Propagation, Journal of Physics – Condensed Matter, Optics Communications, Optical Engineering, Journal of Electromagnetic Analysis and Application.
