Biography
Toshiharu Shinoka, MD, is a Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Shinoka is also Director of the Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering Program of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Heart Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Research Interest
His clinical interests are in the areas of the surgical treatment and repair of newborns with congenital heart defects and cardiopulmonary transplantation. In his tenure at Yale University, he completed the first successful Tissue Engineered Vascular Graft implantation in the United States in 2011. He has successfully completed three additional tissue engineered vascular graft implantations at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
His research interests focus on the development of second-generation tissue engineered vessels for the repair of congenital heart defects. Dr. Shinoka has authored 220 publications and presented to both national and international audiences on his surgical and tissue engineering procedures to treat cardiac malformations and congenital heart disease.
