Biography
Dr. Chaudhary is Professor of Medicine and the Bloom Chair in Lymphoma Research. He is also Division Chief of the Jane Ann Nohl Division of Hematology and Blood Diseases, director of USC Blood and Marrow Transplant Program and coleader of Molecular Genetics Program of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is a nationally recognized physician-scientist who has research interests in several areas of cancer, including biology of normal and leukemic hematopoietic stem cells,AIDS-associated cancers, cancer drug resistance programmed cell death, cellular signaling and gene therapy. He is also interested in molecularly targeted and biological therapies for leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma and solid tumors, and novel strategies to improve the outcome of stem cell transplantation. Dr. Chaudhary has authored or co-authored publications in such outstanding journals as Cell, Immunity, JNCI, Blood and PNAS, and holds six US patents in the areas of hematopoietic stem cell purification, multi-drug resistance to cancer chemotherapy, and cellular signaling. Dr. Chaudhary obtained his medical degree in 1988 from Delhi University, Maulana Azad Medical College. He then received a PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1993 under the supervision of Dr. Igor Roninson, where he did pioneering research in the isolation and characterization of bone marrow stem cells and mechanism of multi-drug resistance to cancer chemotherapy. As a part of his postdoctoral training, Dr. Chaudhary worked in the laboratory of Dr. Leroy Hood, where he was involved in the isolation and characterization of several novel genes involved in the regulation of apoptosis and immune response. Current work in Dr. Chaudhary’s laboratory is focused on development of molecularly targeted therapy for the treatment of KSHV associated malignancies, microtransplantation for the treatment of hematologic malignancies and development of next generation lentiviral vectors for delivery of chimeric antigen receptors.
