Dr. Turgut is a neurosurgeon at Adnan Menderes University Hospital, Aydın, Turkey. He received the MD degree in 1984 (Ege University, İzmir, Turkey) and specialist in neurosurgery in 1994 (Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey). He has authored over 200 publications which received over 500 citations. He is a member of editorial board and reviewer of many scientific journals.

Research interest of Mehmet Turgut includes spine surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, infections of spine and brain (such as hydatidosis, TB, and brucellosis) neuroscience including development of central nervous system, stereology, melatonin and pineal research.
