Biography

Dr. John Burand is an Insect Pathologist in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst working on microbes, particularly viruses that cause diseases in bees. Before joining the faculty at U-Mass Dr. Burand was a research and postdoctoral associate at the Boyce Thompson Institute at Cornell University and in the Department of Entomology at Texas A&M University. He received his Ph.D. degree at Washington State University working on insect viruses in the Department of Bacteriology and Public Health and received his M.S. degree from Miami University in the Department of Microbiology. John’s research interests are in the area of molecular basis for pathogenesis of viruses in insects as well as factors influencing the host range of viruses. He is currently examining the epizootiology of viruses of honey bees including their transmission and replication in other bee species including bumble bees.
