Biography

April J. Rogers, MD, MPH, MBA, is an Assistant Professor at St. John’s University in the Department of Health Administration, College of Professional Studies. In 2016, Dr. Rogers became the first Health Disparity Research fellow for the Association of Black Cardiologists at New York University School of Medicine, Department of Population Health. During her tenure, she was invited to speak at the American Heart Association, National Medical Association and the Association of Black Cardiologists annual scientific conferences regarding her work on sleep, cardio-metabolic diseases, and health disparities.

Resistant Hypertension and Sleep Duration among Blacks with Metabolic Syndrome MetSO

Introduction: Resistant hypertension (RHTN) is an important condition affecting 29% of the hypertensive population. Sleep disturbances are increasingly recognized as underlying disorders among patients with RHTN. We evaluated associations of RHTN with short sleep duration among blacks with metabolic syndrome (MetS), a vulnerable population characterized by high prevalence of RHTN.

Methods: Data from the Metabolic Syndrome Outcome Study (MetSO), a NIH-funded cohort study characterizing metabolic syndrome (MetS) among blacks. MetS was defined according to criteria from the Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III).
