Biography
Dr. Murugan is a genitourinary pathologist whose current research interests are focused on genitourinary cancers with an emphasis on renal tumors. Ongoing research projects include a study addressing the classification, clinicopathologic features and treatment outcome of papillary renal cell carcinoma, gene expression analysis of rhabdoid transformation in clear cell renal cell carcinoma, and clonality of bladder tumors following radical nephroureterectomy. Murugan is also participating in clinicopathological studies of primary Ewing sarcoma of the kidney and testicular mesothelioma. Research projects in the planning stage include bladder cancer prognostication using cell cycle gene expression, correlation of bladder biopsies with FISH cytology data, study of low grade prostate cancer in African-American men and fibroblast growth factor receptor mutations in urothelial carcinoma. Murugan is also investigating rare cases of interstitial lung disease with a pulmonologist.
