Biography
Dr. Julio Gutierrez is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and the Director of Hepatobiliary Cancer at the Texas Liver Institute. Dr. Gutierrez received his bachelor degree from UC Berkeley and his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He completed his Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at UC San Diego. Prior to joining TLI, Dr. Gutierrez concluded his training in Transplant Hepatology at the University of Miami Miller Transplant Institute. Dr. Gutierrez attends both inpatient and outpatient Transplant Hepatology service at UTHSCSA. He is focused on innovative techniques and therapies for patients with liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). In addition, he teaches health care professionals including medical students, residents and fellows.
Dr. Gutierrez is well-trained in both clinical and basic science research. He has published extensively in primary biliary cirrhosis, hepatitis C, and alcohol induced liver disease. He is also experienced in “omics” technologies, which was major focus of his work in San Diego.
Dr. Gutierrez has been chosen as a National Medical Fellow and National Association of Gastroenterology Fellow. He has been distinguished with the Lieberman-Klein Award, the Louis Seaman Grant in Microbiology by the New York Academy of Science, and the Gelernt Award. His research has been sponsored by the National Institute of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He is fluent in English and Spanish.
