Biography

Professor Dua is an eye surgeon and academician working at the Queens medical centre. He specialises in corneal transplantation and ocular surface disease for which he has international recognition. He has served his patients, his students and his profession in various capacities which include: President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (2011-14); First Chair of the Clinical Council for Eye Health Commissioning, England (2014-15);  Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Ophthalmology (2007-14); President, European Association for Vision and Eye Research Foundation (EVERf , 2010-2014); President of EuCornea, the European Society of Cornea and Ocular surface disease specialists (2011-12) and of EVER, the European Association for Vision and Eye Research (2008). He is also civilian consultant advisor to the Royal Air Force and member of the International steering committee of the second dry eye workshop.  He is member Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis and the only UK member of the American Ophthalmological Society.  He has recently been appointed as Editor-in-chief of the Journal of EuCornea (the official journal of EuCornea) which will be published by Elsevier.

 

He has more than 120 awards and accolades which include The Times Higher Education Award 2014 for ‘Research project of the year’; the Rotary Foundation Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award (2013); listed by the magazine ‘Ophthalmologist’ in the top 20 most influential individuals in Ophthalmology worldwide (2014) and regarded as one of five Ophthalmologists in the list of ‘Britain’s Top Doctors (2010) published by the Times magazine.

 

He has over 300 scientific publications, has supervised 42 postgraduate (PhD and MD) students.  He has been endowed with honorary life memberships of The Pune Ophthalmological Society, India; The Medical Contact Lens and Ocular surface Society (MCLOSA) UK. He has been conferred with honorary Fellowships of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the College of Optometrists, UK.

His research and innovations have changed clinical practice across the world. The recent discovery of a layer (Dua’s Layer) in the cornea has informed three new surgical techniques and made lamellar corneal transplantation safer.
