Abstract

Formulation of Mucuna pruriens Seed Extract as Tablets and in vivo Evaluation of the Anti-diabetic Properties of the Tablets

Diabetes mellitus and its complications continue to be one of the highest causes of morbidity and mortality in recent time. In the present study, Mucuna pruriens seed extract has been formulated into tablets using direct compression and wet granulation methods and the in vivo anti-diabetic properties of the tablet have been evaluated in alloxan-induced diabetic rabbits. Mechanical properties of the tablets were assessed using crushing strength, friability and the crushing strengthfriability ratio while the drug release properties were evaluated using disintegration and dissolution times. The in vivo antidiabetic properties of the tablets was evaluated in alloxaninduced diabetic rabbits and compared with the effects of glibenclamide tablets.
